The Power of Massive Activity

The Power of Massive Activity

As you know I often write of simplifying your life, focus, and efficiency.  Today, my emphasis is in a different area.  I’m going to discuss the power of massive activity.

I will freely admit that I have a full life.  A very full life. I’m a single mom to three boys, run my own business, volunteer on boards, and started a program to bring leadership skills to students.  Oh yeah…and I just added the role of Executive Director for the Bethel Chamber of Commerce!  One may think…how is that simplifying your life??  How can you possibly do all of that justice?

My answer is that if it gives you energy it will increase your ability to be productive.

Have you ever heard the phrase “If you want something done, give it to a busy person”?  This came about because competent, busy people have learned how to laser focus, how to prioritize, and how to choose the things that bring them energy.  This makes them highly effective and often hugely successful.

One caveat is if you are busy for the sake of being busy.  If you are someone who takes on activities that contribute to other people’s goals and agendas but that have little to do with Your Big Vision this can drain you and create mental clutter that decreases effectiveness.  That’s NOT what I mean.  I’m talking about the activities that bring YOU joy.

I was just speaking to one of my clients about the effect a slow day (week/quarter) can have on your mental state and your output.  She said, “When things are slow I find myself getting lazy. But when things are super busy it’s like my mind becomes clearer and my body wants to do even more.”

I’m not suggesting you all become crazy people …like ME!  My point is that if you are thinking of taking on something new don’t say no until you’ve asked the following questions:

  1. Does this contribute to my ultimate goals and vision for where I want to be in life?
  2. Does the thought of it get me excited?
  3. When I talk about this project or idea, do I speak a little faster/lean forward/become filled with passion?

If you answered yes to these questions it’s worth taking a deeper dive.

If you can add one project, exercise, or activity to your week that fills you with energy and contributes to what you want to do or be, it has the potential to increase your productivity and energy in all areas of your life.

So….what’s it gonna be?
